You can get the tribal Polynesian tattoo on your arms, chest, shoulders, legs, and even head. As we know, there was a tradition to put tattoos on the whole body to have more protection and show respect to Gods. A large amount of tattoos means your high social status and achievements during life. If you want to add some modernity to Polynesian tattoos, the idea of getting the Hawaii Islands with the pattern is right for you. Also, it is a good option if you want to have a tribal pattern in a small size. Step up your flex appeal game with a Polynesian half sleeve tattoo.

Not to mention, they are all considered tribal tattoos in style and use tribal shapes to create imagery that is simple yet effective. To the Samoan people, tattoos are an intricate part of life, performed with excruciating pain that leads to accepting that person as a mature individual. It can either be represented on its own, as a couple or a pattern. There are many different, slightly modified versions of enata you can commonly find in Polynesian tattoos. The different cultures in the region, from Samoan, Marquesan, Tahitian, and Hawaiian to Maori, often have slightly differing designs.

The term “Polynesian tattoo” encompasses a wide variety of tattoo styles that originate from many different Pacific Islands, such as Hawaii, Samoa, and New Zealand. Although most of the former options typically apply to men, female Polynesian tattoos do exist as well. Another form of Polynesian tattoo that lacks size and looks quite subtle is a Polynesian wrist tattoo, comprising mostly just one symbol.

The tattoo also mostly stands out when placed as an upper forearm tattoo. Traditional tattoos are quite safe to install, since they’ve existed in the Polynesian culture for decades. The design makes no room for creativity, but contains tons of shapes and borders that make the visuals quite presentable at all times. Since Polynesian tattoos reek of wisdom, incorporating extravagant artwork should be the only way to go about it. And if you agree with that take of ours, you might just like the features of a Polynesian arm tattoo. Even though Polynesian tattoos are almost always painful and brutal, a great variant that absorbs the pain effectively is a Polynesian forearm tattoo, which also varies in size.

Balancing shades are used to lend them the authentic Polynesian tribal art look. Turtle tattoos are popular and play an important role throughout all Polynesian cultures. Turtle or honu is considered a symbol of health, fertility, peace, foundation, and longevity in life. Once you acquire that polynesian tattoo, take care of it very well to prevent it from being infected, and allow it to heal properly. A tattoo is either priced by the hour, or by its size, the amount of colors used, the details, or if it’s an original design.

Traditional Polynesian tattoos were made with rake-like objects instead of needles for centuries. Tattooing was accompanied by a ritual, and the process took days or even weeks to complete. In some cases, this method is still in use, but it’s very time-intensive and can lead to severe complications. The stylized pattern of the lizard symbol is highly similar to that of enata, or the symbol for a human. Some sources suggest that the reason for this is that in Polynesian myths, gods and spirits often appeared to humans in the form of lizards. In most Polynesian tribes, this symbol stands for protection, strength, and guidance – in some, it’s also connected to the idea of adaptability.

Tahiti is also known by the name of French Polynesia and in this island, only people of high social status had the right to get tattoos. Tattooing involves a series of rituals during which a design is changed with the passage of time – it may take many years to attain a complete look. These tattoos stand for courage, strength status and passion of the bearer.

There is no reason to add the stingray pattern on numerous tattoos than it being overtly beautiful. Besides, they also signify a state of tranquillity and refinement. They are also very swift in movement and energetic and hence they represent the same. The stylized variant of this entata is a group of them joined together in a row and seemingly holding hands.

Gorgeous Feminine Polynesian Hand Tattoos

Polynesian tattoos and the process through which they are traditionally done are sacred and a rite of passage within the culture. Without Polynesian heritage, careful research should be done before any tattoo is received. Maori Polynesian tattoos were born in New Zealand, the native land of the indigenous Maori people.

Polynesians include Hawaiians, Tongans, Tahitians, Samoans, Māori, and several other groups of people. Polynesian myths claim that spirits often appeared to men as lizards, and this more than likely contributed to the significance of lizards and gecko tattoos. They ate the meat and used the shells to make decorations, trumpets, and other horns.

Again, there’s a fun motion to this piece created by the various directions of flow. Okay, this is really unique and not because of the design, but because of the placement. Either way, this is such a sick tattoo and I love that the parts morph into each other so smoothly. Joints, usually, represent a union, as it joins two parts of the body. The farther it is from the head, or the king of the family, the faraway in the alliance it is. Ankles and Wrists are symbolic of connection and the bracelets or anklets placed on them are symbol of commitment.

Not everyone is the same and some like to display a tattoo that is ‘in your face’ sort of obvious. Of the myriad of tattoos ideas out there, this particular one is meant for such men. The Niuean inspired patterning is intricate, bold and refined in equal measures. Designed to show the shape, strength and length of your leg, this combination of solid geometric shapes weaves around your musculature.

Polynesian people have this belief that the ocean is where all of the souls go after they die. Oceans are symbolized by an arc, or an incomplete circle that is moving outwards. A line is usually added to the circle, which stands for the waves that its natives will see often when they’re out at sea. If you are thinking about getting a tribal tattoo, you may want to seriously consider getting a Polynesian tattoo.

The following gallery of the best 93 Polynesian tattoo ideas showcases the wide array of themes and that go into symbolic tattoo art. Finally, after 150 years of religious suppression, tattoos have returned to their rightful place as cultural symbols of Polynesia. They consider it to be their second home, the place where they will rest when they leave for their last voyage. This symbol depicts the relationships between humans and also the ones they share with the gods. This symbol originates from the Marquesas language and symbolizes life experiences, birth, and rank in society.

150 Awe-Inspiring Polynesian Tattoo Designs & Meanings

arm polynesian tattoo design

One of the best Polynesian tattoo designs that I found on this list. This upper body tattoo has covered up the entire chest and both the arms of the wearer. It looks quite attractive and must have required a lot of patience on the part of the tattoo artist and the wearer. Although black ink is quite traditional, you can mix in some colors for sure.

Enchanting Polynesian Tattoo Ideas To Wear This Instant!

However, if you’d like to go ahead and get it anyway, make sure to clear your schedule, since the pattern often takes multiple sessions to complete. Unless you actually have Polynesian ancestors, getting a Polynesian tattoo should be a no-no as it was mostly worn by dons. Doing so might also not make you the most approachable person at a 9-5.

Similarly, there were symbols specific to certain families and also symbols for particular roles that people played in tribes. Getting inked on the thighs is ideal for someone who does not want to flaunt their tattoos all the time. Always choose a design based on your personality and not on an impulse. They can be seashells or turtle shells, though the latter is more famous because of their significance in Polynesian culture. You get to choose from a lot of options when it comes to floral designs in Samoan tattoos. The most preferred floral tattoo designs are the hibiscus and lotus flowers with tentacles.

Meaning of Polynesian Tattoos

It is regarded as a good force in Polynesian culture and, hence, is a good sign to bear. You can combine the turtle symbol with a few other symbols to carve out a complex, intricate design on your back that represents deep spiritual and cultural meaning. Polynesian symbols are not only exotic but also have deep cultural and spiritual meanings attached to them.

They are all tribal in style and all have meanings related to the relationship between being an individual and being part of a tribe and lineage of ancestors. For some, it may be hard to tell the difference between the various Polynesian cultures and their tattoo art; in a way, they are very similar. Polynesian tattoos are a bold choice, even if current tattooing methods are far more efficient and less painful than traditional Polynesian ones. These kinds of tattoos tend to be quite large in size and take a long time to get through.

Here we have another Polynesian tattoo that almost looks like a sword. It adds that extra pop and breaks away from the usual black and gray. The tiny details and fine lines are also very nice and complement the design. The only issue that I could comment on is the bottom area of the tattoo; the lines become a bit shaky but that can be touched up easily. Once again we have a pair of tattoos that look identical at first glance but when looking closer you notice how different they truly are. Again, this a great idea for those that want to keep things symmetrical but can’t justify wasting prime tattoo space for two of the same designs.

For the Maori aboriginals of New Zealand, Ta Moko is also a rite of passage into manhood and womanhood. Face tattoos are culturally popular and include many swirling and arching thin lines that flow over the curves of the cheekbones, nose, chin and forehead. For men, the entire face is usually consumed by the tattoos while women frequently were only tattooed around the lips and chin.

Maintenance Tips After Getting Polynesian Tattoos

The Polynesian tattoo is the perfect design to combine inks for several reasons. The geographical border of this region is New Zealand, Hawaii, and Easter Island. There live many tribes; the most famous are the Marquesas, Samoans, Niueans, Tongans, Cook Islands, Tahitians, and Maori.

As for the tattoo process, Samoans use tattoo instruments made from wood, pig tusks, turtle shells, or other organic objects. The Samoans call the word tattoo ‘tatau’ in their culture, and even have more words related to tattoos. This would be reserved for wealthy families and could take weeks or months depending on how many tattoos the person was going to have done.

Nice clean linework and smooth packing, all come together to create these fantastic leg pieces. This may be a simple tattoo but wow are those lines insanely smooth and consistent? The line work is the basis of your design and can often determine how good the piece will turn out. While you can indeed hide imperfections with shading or solid packing, it can be tricker to do that when it comes to the Polynesian style because the lines are more exposed. Luckily this artist knows exactly what he’s doing and gave his client an almost perfect Polynesian tattoo.

This tattoo design has incorporated not only the Koi fish, which represents good fortune, but also vibrant colors which gives it a distinctive look. This design starts from the lower neck and travels downwards to the wrist. Each component of the tattoo has miniature Polynesian symbols incorporated in it. The Polynesian symbols are collaborating together to form a feather that looks quite alluring.

The varying directions of the lines create a busy look and feel. As you can see the artist added shading to give it a three-dimensional appearance. The linework, shading, and solid black packing are absolutely gorgeous, credit to the artist for doing such a good job. On today’s agenda, we’ll be focusing on Polynesian tattoos, not to be confused with Tribal. If you’ve been thinking of getting a Polynesian design, then this is the list for you.First off, we have this awesome sword-like leg piece. Usually, this style of tattoo is done in solid black or black and gray, but the artist took the style and added their own twist, and it paid off.

Earn up to 100,000 United miles when sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line

united cruise

United Cruises also frequently runs offers that allow you to earn additional miles for cruise bookings. I've seen promotions offering as many as 10 miles per dollar spent, up to 60,000 miles, for balcony and suite accommodations booked with a MileagePlus credit card via United Cruises. However, Summer Hull, TPG's director of content, advises that 2 miles per dollar generally isn't a great return.

Which credit card should I use to book?

After navigating to the United Cruises website, use the "Cruise Search" box to narrow down your choices by where you'd like to go, when, for how long and with which cruise line and ship.

Card Issuer

To learn more about a sailing, click the "View Itinerary" button next to it. On the next page, in addition to the itinerary, you'll be able to review information about the ship, including dining and entertainment options. "In general, cruises are a better way to earn airline miles than to redeem airline miles," says Katie Genter, a TPG senior writer. "So, it's typically best to redeem airline miles for flights, not cruises. But, you may occasionally get good value when redeeming miles to book an airline vacation package that includes a cruise. If you've already got a ton of United miles burning a hole in your pocket, you can redeem them for the purchase of a cruise.

Why I chose United Cruises

After your booking is completed, you'll be taken to a confirmation page, and a receipt will be sent to the email address you entered when making the purchase. Use the provided deck plan to see which cabin locations are available, and click the "Select" button next to the room number you've chosen. Click here to find a Norwegian Cruise Line sailing through United Cruises. However, even occasional flyers can benefit from the miles that they'll rack up in the program. TPG currently values United MileagePlus miles at 1.4 cents each, meaning that 60,000 miles would be worth $840 at our valuation.

When you find the room type for you, click the "Select" button under the price. Before choosing, take care to read the fine print, as some cabins have quirks (balconies with obstructed views, for example). A United representative told me that an exchange rate is applied to the dollar price of the cruise to get the mileage price. That means the mileage price for each cabin type can vary across cruise ships and sail dates. Due to 2021's cruise industry restart, I found myself sailing quite a bit — and flying United to get there — which meant I achieved airline status for the first time ever and earned a ton of miles. Now I'm hooked on earning and have been making sure to rake in miles whenever I can.

united cruise

On the final tab, you'll be shown a summary of the cruise you're booking, along with a final price, broken down by base fare and port charges, and taxes and fees. You'll be asked if you'd like to purchase travel protection for your sailing. Before booking your cruise through the United Cruises portal, sign in using the link at the top right of the screen. If you're booking over the phone, your agent should ask for your MileagePlus number, so have it readily available.

Airlines

That's up to 70,000 total miles for United MileagePlus members and up to 100,000 miles for those with a United cobranded credit card. If you don't have a United card, it's best to use a card that earns bonus points on cruises. A good option is the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, which earns 2 points per dollar spent on travel, including cruises. Right now, you can earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Earn even more miles with Norwegian Cruise Line

So, although United Cruises is one way to price sailings, you'll want to check other avenues to make sure you're getting the best value — especially if you're booking an inside or ocean view cabin. Absent a sizeable mileage bonus of some sort, it might not be worth it, and you could be better off booking through a travel agent who doesn't charge a fee and who can snag you some extras like onboard credit. You can maximize your purchase by using a United MileagePlus credit card, such as the United Club Infinite Card, which earns 2 miles per dollar spent on cruises. This card is currently offering 80,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open. For my balcony cabin booking, which cost $2,146, I'll be earning 4 miles per dollar — a total of 8,584 miles. I also qualified for a special promotion that earned me 10,000 additional miles for booking a balcony room.

How to earn up to 100,000 United miles when sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line

Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to earn extra miles on your next cruise vacation. Book a Norwegian Cruise Line itinerary through United Cruises today. A solid haul of bonus miles isn't all you get when you book a Norwegian Cruise Line itinerary through United Cruises — you'll get every perk that you'd normally get when you book directly with the cruise line. Not only can you earn miles when booking your cruise through United Cruises, but you can also use miles to pay for a cruise.

In this step, enter the name, birth date, country of residence, gender and contact information for yourself and each member of your travel party. This is also the section where you'll select your dining preferences — pick a fixed dining time or choose flexible dining, where applicable. Here, I'll explain the ins and outs of booking through United Cruises to earn (or burn) points on your next cruise vacation. Beginning this month, you can earn up to 100,000 United MileagePlus miles when you book a cruise through United Cruises. MileagePlus members and United cardholders can always earn up to 25,000 and 45,000 miles, respectively, but you can earn even more when you sail on Norwegian Cruise Line.

As part of the promotion, United Cruises is also upping the miles-earning potential for customers without MileagePlus credit cards. Starting Wednesday, they can earn up to 6 miles for every dollar spent on a cruise. Starting Wednesday, United Cruises offers customers with MileagePlus credit cards up to 10 United MileagePlus miles for every dollar spent on a cruise. That's up from the normal offer of up to 7 miles for every dollar spent. If you book a stateroom through United Cruises on Norwegian's newest cruise ship, Norwegian Prima, MileagePlus members can earn even more — up to 55,000 bonus miles on top of the miles you would already earn.

I originally planned to book through Amex, but I discovered the portal didn't have as much inventory as United Cruises' did. Plus, I wouldn't have earned miles, and I would only have been eligible for the full $300 onboard credit offered by Amex if I had booked a suite — something that wasn't in the budget. Keep reading to learn more about the United Cruises program and why it's a great choice for earning airline miles when booking a cruise vacation — especially right now.

This month, United Cruises is partnering with Norwegian Cruise Line to offer up to 25,000 bonus miles on sailings over four nights in length on top of the miles you'd already be earning when you book your cruise through United Cruises. United Cruises is a booking portal that allows you to earn MileagePlus miles when booking a cruise. The amount of miles you'll earn depends on a few factors (that I'll get into in a moment), but it's safe to say that booking a cruise vacation through United Cruises is the way to go if you're a United loyalist. It applies to new bookings for cruises scheduled to take place between March 16, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2024. United Cruises offers access to sailings operated by just about every cruise line you can think of, including such popular brands as Norwegian Cruise Line as well as various luxury and river cruise lines. When you book a cruise with United Cruises, you get everything that the line offers plus up to 75% savings on cruises and a best price guarantee.

Also, the number of miles that customers earn as part of the promotion is based on the total cruise purchase price, excluding port charges, port expenses and taxes. I ended up calling the customer service number to have an agent book for me over the phone. The current offer is particularly appealing if you're eyeing a journey with Norwegian Cruise Line, as booking a Norwegian sailing right now brings the chance for even more miles. Cruise-selling site United Cruises has a new offer out that could get you up to 100,000 United MileagePlus miles for taking a single voyage with one of the many cruise lines it sells.

Titanic vs a Modern Cruise Ship Fleet Comparison with Photos!

titanic compared to modern day cruise ships

Ships are either being built for more capacity and features or specifically for a luxury cruise market, where they tend to be smaller and have fewer than 1,500 passengers. But let’s again see how she compares to the narrowest cruise ship, which again is Celebrity Xploration (although Le Ponant, a luxury yacht-style cruise ship, is the same width). These two ships are just 36 feet wide, so around 40% of the width of the Titanic, which was built around a century earlier. SOLAS is a set of international safety regulations established in response to the Titanic catastrophe to ensure maritime safety.

Safety Precautions It’sarison

titanic compared to modern day cruise ships

So, while the Titanic was not a cruise ship, it did have many of the features that have since become standard on modern cruise ships. Although cruise ship food has historically had a bad reputation, modern cruise lines have greatly improved the dining experience. Nearly every cruise line has fine dining experiences and dozens of onboard restaurants. The scope and scale of activities on modern cruise ships have expanded significantly since the Titanic’s maiden voyage. Second-class passengers slept on bunk beds, with two or four cabins per stateroom.

Cruise Ships That Are a Similar Size to Titanic

titanic compared to modern day cruise ships

The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 brought about many changes, the most famous of which being the number of lifeboats required by a ship. In 1914 The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) was created to provide guidelines that ships must follow. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. Plus, if you want to learn more about the cost of cruising on a modern ship, so you can compare those Titanic prices with the latest itineraries, I have a guide on cruise costs here. But the Titanic isn’t completely dwarfed by all modern ships – with the concept of small ship cruising becoming extremely popular.

Stabilizers and state-of-the-art navigation systems for enhanced safety

Additionally, ocean liners are faster than cruise ships, with average speeds of about knots (29 mph/47 kph). You might be wondering how the Titanic, once deemed the “unsinkable” ship, compares to the giant floating resorts we know today as modern cruise ships. When the Titanic embarked on its tragic maiden voyage in 1912, it represented the height of luxury and cutting-edge technology for ocean liners.

Titanic vs Modern Cruise Ships – Length Comparison

Gross tonnage (GT) is the total molded volume of the enclosed spaces of a ship, calculated by measuring it from the keel to the funnel, the stern to the bow, and to the outside of the hull framing. It is a replacement for gross register tonnage (GRT), the unit of measurement used during the time of the Titanic. After the incident, the cruise industry made magnificent improvements in cruise design and safety precautions to ensure smooth sailing. Undoubtedly, the Titanic was also the biggest cruise ship and epitome of its era and an epitome of excellence, but unfortunately, an iceberg snatched her entire glory. Well, over time, the world has gone through so many crises and money inflammation, that’s why you may notice a substantial difference between the fare of the Titanic and the modern cruise.

Q5: What kind of entertainment options are available on modern cruises?

Even Royal Caribbean’s smallest ship, the Majesty of the Seas, has a beam of 105 ft. (32 m), which still exceeds the Titanic’s width by quite a lot. The reason modern cruise ships are not much longer than the Titanic is mostly due to the limitations of port infrastructure. Most ports can’t accommodate ships beyond a certain length, which naturally caps how long these ships can be. As a result, cruise lines have adapted by designing taller ships with multiple decks, rather than extending their length.

10 Ways The World's Largest Cruise Ship Compares To The Titanic.

In contrast, the largest modern-day cruise ships can exceed 1,000 feet (300 meters) in length, including behemoths like Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas. When it comes to comparing the size of the Titanic to modern-day cruise ships, the difference is astounding. The Titanic, once considered the epitome of luxury and size, pales in comparison to the massive floating cities that dominate the seas today.

Passengers can enjoy multiple pools, water parks, rock-climbing walls, ice-skating rinks, zip lines, and even simulated surfing experiences. The range of dining options has expanded to include specialty restaurants and celebrity chef collaborations, catering to diverse culinary tastes. Today’s modern cruise ships are equipped with state-of-the-art safety features and must adhere to strict safety regulations. These ships are designed with multiple redundant systems to ensure that they are as safe as possible.

Total Passengers and Crew

In comparison, the lifeboats on the Titanic were made of wood and canvas and were not equipped with modern safety features. Despite its fame and the luxury it offered passengers, the Titanic wasn’t actually a cruise ship. Instead, it was an ocean liner, a type of ship designed for transporting people across the ocean from one point to another. Ocean liners usually have a stronger build and a deeper hull to handle rough sea conditions. They typically operate on fixed routes, like the transatlantic crossings between Europe and North America.

Additionally, modern ships have a suite of safety features to avoid disasters before they even occur. Advanced radar detection systems, fire suppression systems, advancements in steering technology, and more help make today’s cruise ships safer than ever. To cater to the growing demand for immersive experiences, modern cruise ships have embraced virtual reality (VR) technology.

Gross tonnage isn’t anything to do with the weight of the ship, despite the word “ton” being in the term. Sometimes, the measurements available online can make the Titanic appear quite tall. However, it’s important to consider that her smokestacks are exceptionally high, which can significantly distort the perceived height.

However, the sailing period of Titanic does not reflect any such strict regulations. Hence, design considerations for a safer and cleaner environment regulate the present cruise shipping business. The welding action takes place in a single run, with more than one seams for extra assurance. In conclusion, the comparison between the Titanic and modern-day cruise ships highlights the remarkable progress made in the cruise industry over the past century. The Titanic, once hailed as the largest and most luxurious ship of its time, now seems modest in comparison to the colossal floating resorts that grace our seas today.

These cruises are like bustling cities fully equipped with all the facilities. Modern cruise ships offer extensive accommodation options, even though I get confused sometimes. From their ordinary staterooms and cabins to their junior suites and grand suites that are nearly 2 to 3 decks high. The Titanic was built in 1912, and at that time there was no cutting-edge technology and communication systems. Even it lacked dynamic stabilizers, and that’s why they were not as comfortable as today’s modern cruises.

Of course, it’s worth remembering that the Titanic had a class system in place, and some of the areas of the ship would be out of bounds to third- and second-class passengers. And conversely, first-class passengers would have avoided the areas where third-class passengers tended to mingle. The largest ships in the world often have more – of the 20 decks on the Icon of the Seas, 18 are passenger decks. And some MSC Cruises and P&O Cruises ships have decks numbered as high as 20, although not all of these are open to guests.

Modern cruise ships offer a wide range of amenities and entertainment options to cater to different interests and preferences. These include multiple dining options, restaurants, swimming pools, spas, fitness centers, theaters, casinos, and more. For example, Symphony of the Seas has 20 dining options, 10 swimming pools, a spa, a fitness center, a theater, an ice-skating rink, and a zip line. In contrast, Titanic had only two restaurants, a swimming pool, and a gymnasium. As a lover of history and travel, I’ve always been fascinated by the Titanic and its tragic sinking. With its grandeur and opulence, the Titanic was once the largest and most luxurious ship of its time.

When your ship spends the day in Colon, you can see more of Panama on a range of shore excursions. Despite the monumental achievement of engineering that the Panama Canal represents, the drive from Colon to Panama City is just under an hour, so there are plenty of options. The Panama Canal is open to ships year-round, but the most pleasant time to cruise is in the winter season, from November to May. During these months, the climate is less humid and there is less rainfall. On Celebrity’s ships, you can enjoy a different restaurant at every meal, with menus designed by a Michelin-starred chef. Try anything from mouth-watering seafood to steak, flavor-packed Italian, and gourmet French cuisine.

Understand the two main itinerary options before you book

Those on "partial crossings" or simply docked at Colon might consider completing the crossing in a smaller boat. This popular shore excursion begins at Gamboa, one of the towns along the Canal. It takes passengers through the remaining two Canal locks, all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Ocean to Ocean

A partial transit, on the other hand, gives you a taste of the Panama Canal on a shorter cruise from Colon, on the Caribbean side, to the Gatun Locks and back again. You will most likely find you want to enjoy the experience from different areas on the ship. When you’re in a lock, it’s fascinating to watch the mechanisms of these engineering masterpieces, so find the best position on deck to observe this. Celebrity will take you seamlessly from one adventure to the next as you explore jewel-like Caribbean islands and historic Cartagena. On a one-way voyage, combine the thrill of the canal with adrenaline-fueled adventure in Costa Rica and iced margaritas on Mexico’s golden beaches. Make the most of your time ashore with our range of imaginative excursions, from Destination Highlights to Small Group Discoveries and Private Journeys designed just for you.

EXCURSIONS

A full transit of the Panama Canal involves passing through six sets of locks, crossing an entire lake and contending with other marine traffic waiting to go through the lock system one at a time. It can take a cruise ship 10 hours or so to cover the 48 miles from the Caribbean to the Pacific. The final set of locks, the Gatun Locks, is a three-chambered system that lowers ships a staggering 85 feet to the level of the Atlantic Ocean. This descent is just as breathtaking as the ascent, providing a thrilling climax to your journey through the locks. The Gatun Locks are the original locks of the Panama Canal, and their impressive operation is a testament to the enduring quality of their early 20th-century construction. As your ship makes its descent, you’ll feel the sheer power and size of the locks, making the journey through the Gatun Locks a truly humbling experience.

Day by Day

Cruise the Panama Canal and enjoy a zoomed-in real-life look at perhaps last century’s greatest engineering achievement… along with its surrounding lush, verdant lands. This testament to human audacity joins the Pacific and Caribbean in the most direct way possible, and is worth making a leisurely part of your vacation. Even better, Panama Canal cruises call at Central American ports along the canal like Limón and Cartagena… plus at Caribbean island hotspots along the way. You’ll get to explore the local beaches and culture while heading to or from one of the greatest man-made marvels in the world. As you cruise the canal, you will pass through the two-chambered Miraflores Locks, the one-chambered Pedro Miguel Lock, and three-chambered Gatun Locks. Along the way you’ll find Gatun Lake, once the largest manmade lake in the world, which has proved a boon for the species that thrive here, undisturbed by the passing ships. Taking a cruise through the Panama Canal allows travelers to witness first hand this marvel of modern engineering. The canal system is made up of three locks and a series of artificial lakes and canals.

Sofia's geographic location, in the foothills of the weekend retreat Vitosha mountain, further adds to the city's specific atmosphere. After the abolition of Communism in 1989, Sofia witnessed the construction of whole business districts and neighbourhoods, as well as modern skyscraper-like glass-fronted office buildings, but also top-class residential neighbourhoods. The 126-metre (413 ft) Capital Fort Business Centre is the first skyscraper in Bulgaria, with its 36 floors. However, the end of the old administration and centrally planned system also paved the way for chaotic and unrestrained construction, which continues today. The city eventually fell to the Byzantine Empire in 1018, following the Byzantine conquest of Bulgaria. Sredets joined the uprising of Peter Delyan in 1040–1041 in a failed attempt to restore Bulgarian independence and was the last stronghold of the rebels, led by the local commander Botko.[95] During the 11th century many Pechenegs were settled down in Sofia region as Byzantine federats.

You can’t go wrong with its range of deeply moving, world-class performances (with ticket prices starting from only 10 euros). Fans of classical music can also opt for a night out at the excellent Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. Start by visiting one of the world’s biggest Orthodox churches and a major Bulgarian symbol – the stunning neo-Byzantine Aleksander Nevski Cathedral. Famous for its gold-laden domes, the church commemorates the 200,000 Russian soldiers who died for Bulgaria’s independence during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78).

Sofia applied to host the Winter Olympic Games in 1992 and in 1994, coming second and third respectively. The city was also an applicant for the 2014 Winter Olympics, but was not selected as candidate. In addition, Sofia hosted EuroBasket 1957 and the 1961 and 1977 Summer Universiades, as well as the 1983 and 1989 winter editions. For a few decades after the liberation, Sofia experienced large population growth, mainly by migration from other regions of the Principality (Kingdom since 1908) of Bulgaria, and from the still Ottoman Macedonia and Thrace.

A leisurely stroll around the city centre lets the visitor uncover Bulgaria’s diverse layers of history, mixing up Roman ruins and Soviet architecture, as well as Ottoman and Byzantine religious and cultural influences. The adoption of the @ symbol for electronic communication began, predictably but incidentally, with the invention of email in 1971. When Ray Tomlinson was fiddling with code that would allow users to send messages across ARPANET, the experimental network that preceded the Internet, he needed a marker to separate the name of the user from that of the host terminal. He settled on @, one of the least utilized characters in ASCII, which was unlikely to appear in user or computer names and had little potential for causing confusion in the command lines of the operating system.

The first known use of the symbol in its traditional commercial sense is in a 1536 Spanish-language letter from a Florentine merchant. It stood for a unit of volume, arroba (“quadrantal”; from Arabic al-rubʿ, “one-fourth”), which represented the capacity of a standard amphora, a vessel used to store and transport liquids, cereals, and other goods. This use of the symbol was so widespread in Mediterranean trade that it is still called arroba in Spanish and Portuguese today. Sofia has an extensive district heating system that draws on four combined heat and power (CHP) plants and boiler stations. Virtually the entire city (900,000 households and 5,900 companies) is centrally heated, using residual heat from electricity generation (3,000 MW) and gas- and oil-fired heating furnaces; total heat capacity is 4,640 MW. The heat distribution piping network is 900 km (559 mi) long and comprises 14,000 substations and 10,000 heated buildings.

The symbol has long been used to represent the various meanings of the Latin ad, whether directional (“to”) or spatial/temporal (“at”). Several theories posit its original conception as a sort of ligature combining the letter “a” with another character or diacritic. The classicist Berthold Ullman suggested it represents the Latin ad itself, combining a with an uncial d (ꝺ), although he never expounded on the evidence for this conjecture. Others have pointed to the symbol’s historical usage in French writing to represent à (“to,” “at”; derived from Latin ad), but there are no indications that the sign first developed as a combination of a with a grave accent (`). A common contemporary use of @ is in email addresses (using the SMTP system), as in (the user jdoe located at the domain example.com).

There are two golf courses just to the east of Sofia — in Elin Pelin (St Sofia club) and in Ihtiman (Air Sofia club), and a horseriding club (St George club).Sofia was designated as European Capital of Sport in 2018. The decision was announced in November 2014 by the Evaluation Committee of ACES Europe, on the grounds that "the city is a good example of sport for all, as means to improve healthy lifestyle, integration and education, which are the basis of the initiative". Vitosha Boulevard, also called Vitoshka, is a pedestrian zone with numerous cafés, restaurants, fashion boutiques, and luxury goods stores.

Word History

Plovdiv remained the most populous Bulgarian town until 1892 when Sofia took the lead. The city is the hot spot of internal migration, the capital population is increasing and is around 17% of the national,[160] thus a small number of people with local roots remain today, they dominate the surrounding rural suburbs and are called Shopi. Sofia entered a period of economic and political decline in the 17th century, accelerated during the period of anarchy in the Ottoman Balkans of the late 18th and early 19th century, when local Ottoman warlords ravaged the countryside. 1831 Ottoman population statistics show that 42% of the Christians were non-taxpayers in the kaza of Sofia and the amount of middle-class and poor Christians were equal.[105] Since the 18th century the beylerbeys of Rumelia often stayed in Bitola, which became the official capital of the province in 1826.

Sofia has a humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification Dfb; Cfb if with −3 °C isotherm) with an average annual temperature of 10.9 °C (51.6 °F). When winters are snowy, Mt Vitosha offers accessible and cheap ski rides, but bear in mind that the facilities here are basic in comparison to big Bulgarian resorts like Bansko. Non-skiers can catch the Simeonovo gondola (accessible via bus lines 111, 122 and 123) and enjoy a refreshing walk in the woods.

There were 3,162 theatric performances with 570,568 people attending in 2014.[143] The Ivan Vazov National Theatre, which performs mainly classical plays and is situated in the very centre of the city, is the most prominent theatre. The National Opera and Ballet of Bulgaria is a combined opera and ballet collective established in 1891. Some of Bulgaria's most famous operatic singers, such as Nicolai Ghiaurov and Ghena Dimitrova, made their first appearances on the stage of the National Opera and Ballet. Private automobile ownership has grown rapidly in the 1990s; more than 1,000,000 cars were registered in Sofia after 2002. The city has the 4th-highest number of automobiles per capita in the European Union at 546.4 vehicles per 1,000 people.[200] The municipality was known for minor and cosmetic repairs and many streets are in a poor condition. There are different boulevards and streets in the city with a higher amount of traffic than others.

By the 19th century the Bulgarian population had two schools and seven churches, contributing to the Bulgarian National Revival. In 1858 Nedelya Petkova created the first Bulgarian school for women in the city. In 1867 was inaugurated the first chitalishte in Sofia – a Bulgarian cultural institution.

Although not included on the keyboard of the earliest commercially successful typewriters, it was on at least one 1889 model[6] and the very successful Underwood models from the "Underwood No. 5" in 1900 onward. It started to be used in email addresses in the 1970s, and is now routinely included on most types of computer keyboards.

Two functioning cable cars provide year long access from the outskirts of the city. During the 1970s and the 1980s multiple ski slopes of varying difficulty were made available. However, due to the bad communication between the private offshore company that runs the resort and Sofia municipality, most of the ski areas have been left to decay in the last 10 years, so that only one chairlift and one slope work. The most dynamic sectors include Information technology (IT) and manufacturing.

With the dawn of the World Wide Web in the 1990s, the general public rapidly discovered uses for the sign apart from email addresses. In interacting with groups of people in online message boards, chat rooms, and social media, Internet users found the at sign useful for clarifying “at” which users their messages were directed. Twitter, a microblogging platform that was launched in 2006, embraced the phenomenon and in 2007 began embedding hyperlinks to user profiles and collecting tweets directed at them on a dedicated page. Other social networks followed suit, introducing similar features, and the @ sign soon became a standard tool to facilitate online interactions. The earliest yet discovered symbol in this shape is found in a Bulgarian translation of a Greek chronicle written by Constantinos Manasses in 1345.
